Dining Out

Perth, like most popular tourist cities features a wide range of eateries to suit every taste and pocket. There are the usual pizza and burger joints for those wishing to obtain some fast food. There are also plenty of up-market and ethnic restaurants (such as Greek, Chinese, Italian, Japanese and more) for those wishing to spoil themselves with some fine local cuisine accompanied, by a glass of wine (Australian of course). As you can expect from a seaside location, fish dishes are a popular option on most menus. You can expect to find marron (freshwater crayfish), tiger prawns, lobster, and barramundi as options. Bars may also serve some wholesome bar snacks that is naturally accompanied by a cold beer.
Perth has developed as a popular resort for those seeking outdoor pursuits. It is a city where the phrase 'Dining Out' is often literally true. One of the most popular food experiences, during the summer months, is the 'barbie' - not a doll but a barbeque. This made be served on the terrace in restaurants or in the back yard of a local Aussie. Expect to find copious amount of meat sizzling away over hot coals. Meat may comprise of steak, chops, sausages and whatever else can be flipped over with a spatula. Vegetarians will just have to opt for the accompanying side salad. Picnics often revolve around the barbeque and many parks have excellent barbeque facilities, however, be aware that sometimes fire bans may be in operation - fire bans may be common during the hottest and driest parts of the year when the bush is most at risk from careless sparks.
Drinking Out (or in)
The warm Western Australian climate coupled with a relatively high rainfall has enabled world-class wine making. The Swan Valley and the Margaret River region are considered to be excellent locations for grape growing. While many of these wines are exported world wide, some of them never manage to get out of Perth and end up on local wine lists and 'bottle shops.' Wine shops will stock local varieties as well wine from other parts of Australia.
There is nothing quite like a cold refreshing beer on a hot day and in Australia, there are plenty of hot days. It is perhaps not a surprise that Australians are in the top ten countries for beer consumption (as calculated by per head of population). Perth happens to be home to several large brewing companies that export their products worldwide. Swan Brewery produces Western Australian's favorite beers. A pub isn't a pub in Western Australia if it has not a keg of a Swan product in stock such as Swan or the even stronger Emu beer.
There are also smaller breweries providing house gourmet beers with such colorful names as Brass Monkey Stout, Redback (a wheat beer that is a particular favorite for locals), Pale Ale and Rogers Beer.
