No visitor should overlook the attractions of Fremantle. This is a charming part of town that has strived hard to maintain an easy rustic appeal. Fremantle is a short walk over a bridge, across the Swan River from Perth's suburbs. This is a compact, bustling area with more things to do and see per square metre than anywhere else in Perth. There are plenty of shops, a so-called 'cappuccino' strip (due to the abundance of coffee bars), plenty of regular bars, museums, ghost tours, river tours, harbor tours and more. The maritime museum's popularity is well deserved. There are various famous yachts to be seen throughout the museum (including the Australia II that won the America's cup in 1983), a shipwreck gallery and even a submarine. History buffs may also like to spend some time in The Fremantle Prison. This was originally constructed in the middle of the 19th century but was later used as a maximum-security prison until 1991. Other attractions include the war memorial, the army museum, public arts works and the arts centre (constructed originally by convicts as a lunatic asylum). It is possible to spend the day exploring Fremantle by foot, but there are also trams and busses to use if the heat proves too much. |
